Round 1 special

Among their many Round 1 specials, FanDuel is offering Sam Burns and Chris Gotterup both to shoot 66 or better, and I’m biting. They’re two names that probably weren’t used in the same sentences a month ago, but Gotterup has burst onto the scene with a victory at the Scottish Open and a third-place finish at the Open Championship. Then there’s Burns, one of the favorites to win this week. He has five straight top-20s on North American soil, including a near-miss in that Canadian Open playoff before some modest finishes in Scotland and the Open Championship. But he didn’t play poorly over there—he just didn’t score nearly as low as his peers. Burns has a T-7 and a T-12 at the 3M Open under his belt, and his terrific putter should steer him away from bogeys.

For someone who plays as often as Sungjae Im, you’d think he would have more than two PGA Tour titles by now. The Korean is a made-cuts machine and has 48 top-10 finishes in 203 starts on tour—so nearly a quarter of the time, he’s in the top 10.

Im has been plodding along this year, currently 29th in the FedEx Cup race despite falling out of form the last six weeks (three missed cuts, no top-50 finishes). That’s why you can snag him at good value this week to return to his reliable ways. Im tied for second at the 3M when Tony Finau won in 2022. I like my chances for him to contend this week at an easier course.

As Jhonattan Vegas showed in his victory last year, your best advantages in a tournament like the 3M are to be long off the tee and roll in as many putts as you can. Everyone will make birdies this week, so you need to be making them at a high clip. Well, Jake Knapp ranks third on the PGA Tour in birdie average this season, 12th in strokes gained putting and 27th in driving distance. How’s that for course fit?

Knapp was doing fine here last year before a shoulder injury in his third round led to an 81 and a withdrawal. Instead, focus on his recent results: Amid four straight made cuts, Knapp tied for fourth in Detroit and shared the first-round lead in Scotland thanks to a stellar 64. His form and his strengths combine to make him a terrific pick to win this week.
